Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a deeper understanding of Indigenous history and the concept of decolonization. They will explore the impact of colonization on Indigenous peoples, learn about Indigenous cultures, and reflect on ways to support decolonization efforts in their own communities.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for writing reflections and notes
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (if possible)
  • Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, paper) for creative activities
  • Printed resources or articles about Indigenous history (if available)
  • Prepare a list of local Indigenous communities or organizations for research

Activities

  • Research Project: The student will choose an Indigenous group to research. They will learn about their history, culture, and current issues they face. The student will present their findings in a creative format, such as a poster or digital presentation.

  • Creative Expression: Using art supplies, the student will create a piece of art that represents what they learned about Indigenous culture. This could be a drawing, painting, or collage that reflects Indigenous values or symbols.

  • Reflection Journal: The student will write a reflective journal entry about what they learned regarding decolonization and its importance. They should consider how colonization has affected Indigenous peoples and what steps can be taken to support their rights.

  • Community Connection: The student will research local Indigenous organizations or events and write about how they can get involved or support these communities. They could also brainstorm ideas for a project that promotes awareness of Indigenous issues in their own community.
