Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jordan will understand the basics of pest extermination, including identification of common pests, methods of extermination, and the importance of safety and environmental considerations. Jordan will also develop skills in reading, spelling, critical thinking, and life skills related to pest management.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for notes and activities
  • Access to a dictionary or thesaurus for spelling and vocabulary
  • Basic information on common household pests (print or written notes)
  • Materials for a simple recipe (for Home Ec activity)
  • Access to a space for demonstration or role-play (if possible)

Activities

  • Pest Identification Activity:

Jordan will create a chart listing common household pests (like ants, cockroaches, and mice) and their characteristics. This will help in understanding what to look for when identifying pests.

  • Spelling Bee:

Jordan will prepare a list of pest-related vocabulary words (like "extermination," "infestation," "pesticide") and have a fun spelling bee with family members or friends.

  • ASL Sign Language Practice:

Jordan will learn and practice the signs for common pests in American Sign Language (ASL). This will enhance communication skills and awareness of different ways to convey information.

  • Home Ec Recipe:

Jordan will learn to make a natural pest repellent using common household ingredients (like vinegar and essential oils). This ties in home economics with pest management.

  • Critical Thinking Scenarios:

Jordan will be presented with various pest-related scenarios (like finding a mouse in the kitchen) and will brainstorm solutions and the best course of action to take.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think makes a pest a pest? Can you name some common household pests?"
  • "Why is it important to identify pests before trying to exterminate them?"
  • "What are some natural methods of pest control that you think are safe for the environment?"
  • "How can you ensure safety when dealing with pests or using extermination methods?"
  • "What role does critical thinking play when you encounter a pest problem?"
