Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to explore their creativity and problem-solving skills by building different structures using Magnatiles, while also learning about shapes and colors.

Materials and Prep

  • Magnatiles (various shapes and colors)

Before the lesson, ensure that all Magnatiles are clean and ready for play. Familiarize yourself with basic shapes and colors to guide the student during the activities.

Activities

  • Color Hunt:

Ask the student to find and group Magnatiles by color. This will help them recognize colors and improve their sorting skills.

  • Shape Exploration:

Encourage the student to identify and name different shapes as they build. Ask them to create a structure using at least one of each shape.

  • Building Challenge:

Set a simple challenge, like building the tallest tower or a house. This will encourage creativity and problem-solving.

  • Story Time Structure:

Ask the student to build a structure that represents a favorite character or story. This will help them connect their play with imagination.

Talking Points

  • "Look at all these colors! Can you find something red?"
  • "What shape is this? Is it a triangle or a square?"
  • "Let’s see how tall we can make our tower! Can you help me?"
  • "Can you build something from your favorite story? What will it look like?"
