Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the importance of community service and how they can contribute to making the world a better place. They will explore the concept of community, learn about the 3 R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), and participate in activities that promote kindness and environmental awareness.

  • Used books for donation
  • Flower seeds or plants for planting activity
  • Card supplies for making a get well card
  • Trash bags for park cleanup
  • Access to information about local non-profits and community events

Activities

  • Read about Rosie: A Better Beach for Everyone

Start by reading the story of Rosie, who works to improve her local beach. After reading, discuss the main themes and ask questions to encourage critical thinking about community service.

  • Make a Flip Book about the 3 R's

Create a fun flip book illustrating the concepts of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Each page can feature drawings and examples of how to practice these principles in daily life.

  • Random Acts of Kindness Day

Brainstorm and perform several random acts of kindness in the community. This could include helping a neighbor, leaving kind notes in public places, or making a get well card for Mrs. Amanda.

  • Community Cleanup

Organize a cleanup day at a local park. Equip the student with trash bags and gloves, and spend time picking up litter while discussing the importance of keeping the community clean.
