Objective

By the end of this lesson, Rachel will understand the concept of place value, including how digits in a number represent different values based on their position. She will be able to identify the place value of each digit in numbers up to 1,000 and demonstrate her understanding through engaging activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Markers or colored pencils
  • Sticky notes
  • Timer (optional)

Before the lesson, ensure that Rachel is familiar with basic numbers and can count up to 1,000. Prepare a quiet space for her to work and think creatively.

Activities

  • Place Value Chart Creation

Rachel will create a colorful place value chart on a piece of paper. She will label columns for ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands, and then fill in examples with numbers, using different colors for each place value.

  • Number Building Game

Using sticky notes, Rachel will write down digits (0-9) and then create different numbers by combining them. She will practice identifying the place value of each digit in the numbers she builds.

  • Place Value Bingo

Rachel will create a bingo card with different numbers on it. You will call out a place value description (e.g., "the value of the digit in the tens place"), and she will cover the correct number if it matches. This will reinforce her understanding in a fun way!

  • Story of a Number

Rachel will choose a number between 1 and 1,000 and write a short story about it, explaining what each digit represents in terms of place value. For example, if she chooses 345, she can write about 3 hundreds, 4 tens, and 5 ones.

Talking Points

  • "Every digit in a number has a special job depending on where it is. This is called place value."
  • "In the number 345, the 3 is in the hundreds place, which means it represents 300. Can you see how important the position is?"
  • "When we move to the left in a number, each place is ten times greater. So, if you move from the ones to the tens, you multiply by 10!"
  • "Let's think of numbers as a team. Each digit works together in its place to create the whole number!"
  • "Can you think of a number and tell me what each digit represents? Let’s practice together!"
