Objective

By the end of this lesson, L will have a comprehensive understanding of the key math skills developed throughout Year 4 of the Australian curriculum. L will be able to demonstrate knowledge in areas such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and basic geometry through a fun assessment activity.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for calculations and notes
  • Timer (optional, can use a phone or watch)
  • Whiteboard or large sheet of paper for visual aids (optional)
  • Knowledge of Year 4 Australian curriculum math topics

Activities

  • Math Relay Race: Set up a series of math problems around the room. L will race to each station, solve the problem, and move to the next one. This will help reinforce quick thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • Fraction Pizza Party: Create a pretend pizza on paper and ask L to divide it into different fractions (e.g., half, quarter, eighth). Discuss how these fractions relate to real-life situations, like sharing food!

  • Geometry Scavenger Hunt: Go on a scavenger hunt around the house or yard to find objects that represent different geometric shapes (e.g., circles, squares, triangles). L can then draw or list them out, discussing their properties.

  • Math Jeopardy: Create a simple Jeopardy game with categories such as Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Fractions. L can choose questions from each category and earn points for each correct answer.

Talking Points

  • "Can you tell me what addition means and give me an example?"
  • "What happens when we subtract? Can you show me with numbers?"
  • "How do you multiply? What is the difference between multiplication and addition?"
  • "Can you explain what a fraction is? How do we use them in real life?"
  • "What shapes can you find around the house? Can you describe their properties?"
  • "How do we know if two shapes are the same size? What does that mean?"
  • "Why is it important to understand math in our daily lives?"
  • "How do you feel about math? What do you enjoy most about it?"
  • "Can you think of a time when you used math without even realizing it?"
  • "What is one new thing you learned this year that you found really interesting?"
