Objective

By the end of this lesson, L will have a stronger understanding of English language components, including reading comprehension, writing, grammar, and vocabulary. The lesson will culminate in a fun assessment that showcases L's skills and creativity.

Materials and Prep

  • Plain paper
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • Timer (optional, for timed activities)
  • List of vocabulary words (5 words relevant to Year 4)
  • Short story or passage (1-2 paragraphs, age-appropriate)

Before the lesson, prepare a short story or passage for reading comprehension, and select 5 vocabulary words that L can work with during the lesson. Ensure that L is comfortable with the materials and understands the objectives.

Activities

  • Reading Comprehension:

Read the short story or passage together. After reading, discuss the main ideas, characters, and setting. Ask L to summarize the story in their own words.

  • Vocabulary Challenge:

Introduce the 5 vocabulary words. L will create sentences using each word, and then illustrate one of the sentences with a drawing. This will help reinforce understanding of the words.

  • Creative Writing:

Ask L to write a short story (around 100-150 words) using at least 3 of the vocabulary words. Encourage creativity and remind L to focus on structure: beginning, middle, and end.

  • Grammar Game:

Play a fun game where L identifies parts of speech in sentences. Write a few sentences on the board, and L will underline nouns, circle verbs, and highlight adjectives. This will reinforce grammar skills.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think is the main idea of the story we just read?"
  • "Can you tell me who the characters are and what they did?"
  • "How would you use this vocabulary word in a sentence?"
  • "What is your favorite sentence that you wrote? Why do you like it?"
  • "What makes a good story? Let's think about the beginning, middle, and end!"
  • "Can you find the nouns in this sentence? What about the verbs?"
  • "How do illustrations help tell a story?"
  • "Why is it important to use different words instead of repeating the same ones?"
  • "What did you enjoy most about today's lesson?"
  • "How do you feel about your writing skills? What do you want to improve?"
