Objective
By the end of this lesson, Tanner will understand the science behind the changing seasons, particularly fall, and will be able to identify key factors that contribute to this seasonal shift. He will also engage in fun activities that illustrate these concepts through hands-on learning.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and colored pencils or markers
- Access to a computer or tablet for research (optional)
- A notebook for observations and notes
- A camera or smartphone to take pictures (optional)
Before the lesson, make sure to discuss with Tanner what he already knows about the seasons and any specific interests he has about fall. This will help tailor the activities to his interests.
Activities
- Leaf Collection and Identification: Go outside and collect different types of leaves. Once back indoors, research the types of trees they come from and discuss why their leaves change color in the fall.
- Fall Weather Journal: Start a journal to track the weather changes during fall. Tanner can note temperatures, types of precipitation, and any other observations he makes. This will help him understand how weather patterns change with the seasons.
- DIY Weather Vane: Create a simple weather vane using materials available at home. This will help Tanner learn about wind direction and its effect on weather patterns during fall.
- Science Experiment - Color Change in Leaves: Explore how leaves change color by placing a few leaves in water with food coloring. Observe how the colors change over time, illustrating how plants absorb nutrients and water.
Talking Points
- "What do you think happens to trees in the fall? Why do their leaves change color?"
- "Did you know that the change in daylight hours affects how trees prepare for winter? It’s called photoperiodism!"
- "As temperatures drop, trees stop producing chlorophyll, the green pigment in leaves. What colors do you see when that happens?"
- "Let’s think about animals during fall. What do you think they do to prepare for winter?"
- "Weather can change a lot in the fall. What kinds of weather patterns do you notice in your area this time of year?"
- "Why do you think some trees lose their leaves while others keep them? It’s all about survival!"
- "Have you ever noticed how the air smells different in fall? That’s because of the decaying leaves and the change in humidity."
- "Let’s talk about fall festivals and traditions. Do you have a favorite fall activity?"
