Objective
By the end of this lesson, J will be able to recognize and name basic shapes such as circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. J will also understand how these shapes can be found in everyday objects around us.
Materials and Prep
- No additional materials are required for this lesson.
- Prepare a space where J can move around freely and explore shapes in their environment.
- Be ready to point out shapes in common household items or outdoor objects.
Activities
-
Shape Hunt:
Take a walk around the house or yard and look for different shapes. Ask J to point out objects that match the shapes you discuss. For example, "Can you find something that looks like a circle?"
-
Shape Drawing:
Encourage J to draw shapes in the air with their finger and then on paper. You can say, "Let's draw a big square together!" This will help J practice the shapes visually.
-
Shape Sorting:
Have J gather items from around the house and sort them into groups based on their shapes. For example, "Can you put all the round things together?" This will help J understand the differences between shapes.
-
Shape Songs:
Sing a fun song about shapes together. You can make up a tune or use a familiar melody and change the words to include different shapes. For example, "Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are, are you a circle, or a square, shapes are everywhere!"
Talking Points
- "Look at this round object! It’s a circle! Can you find something else that is round?"
- "This is a square! It has four equal sides. Can you count the sides with me?"
- "A triangle has three sides. Can you make a triangle with your hands?"
- "Rectangles are like squares but longer! Can you find a rectangle in the room?"
- "Shapes are everywhere around us! Let’s keep looking for more shapes as we play!"
