Objective

By the end of this lesson, Fiona will be able to prepare a healthy meal from scratch, understand the nutritional benefits of the ingredients used, and gain confidence in her cooking skills. She will also learn how to make informed choices about food that contribute to a balanced diet.

Materials and Prep

  • Fresh vegetables (e.g., bell peppers, broccoli, carrots)
  • Protein source (e.g., chicken breast, tofu)
  • Whole grains (e.g., quinoa, brown rice)
  • Olive oil and spices (e.g., garlic, pepper, herbs)
  • Cooking utensils (knife, cutting board, pots, and pans)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Notebook for taking notes

Before the lesson, ensure that all ingredients are fresh and available. Discuss any dietary restrictions or preferences Fiona may have to tailor the meal accordingly.

Activities

  • Recipe Selection:

Fiona will choose a healthy recipe that interests her, focusing on seasonal ingredients. This will encourage her to explore different cuisines and flavors.

  • Cooking Demonstration:

Fiona will watch a brief cooking demonstration where she will learn basic cooking techniques such as chopping, sautéing, and boiling. This hands-on experience will build her confidence.

  • Meal Preparation:

Fiona will prepare the chosen recipe step-by-step, applying what she learned in the demonstration. She will practice measuring ingredients and timing the cooking process.

  • Tasting and Reflection:
