Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic cooking skills, including measuring ingredients, mixing, and following a simple recipe. They will also learn about kitchen safety and the importance of cleaning up after cooking.

Materials and Prep

  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 cup of butter (softened)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Wooden spoon or spatula for mixing
  • Oven (with adult supervision)
  • Baking tray
  • Cooling rack (optional)

Before starting the lesson, ensure that the oven is preheated to 350°F (175°C) and that an adult is available to assist with any tasks that require supervision.

Activities

  • Measuring Ingredients:

Start by measuring out each ingredient using the measuring cups and spoons. This will help the student understand how to measure accurately and why it is important in cooking.

  • Mixing the Batter:

Once all the ingredients are measured, mix them together in the mixing bowl. Encourage the student to stir until everything is well combined. This is a great way to practice mixing skills!

  • Baking Time:

Help the student pour the batter into the baking tray and place it in the oven. Discuss how the oven works and the importance of adult supervision when using it.

  • Cooling and Tasting:

Once the baking is done, let the treats cool on a cooling rack (if available). After they have cooled, enjoy tasting the delicious results of your hard work!

Talking Points

  • "Why do you think we need to measure our ingredients?"
  • "What do you think will happen if we don't mix the batter well?"
  • "Can you tell me why we need an adult when using the oven?"
  • "What does it smell like when the treats are baking?"
  • "How do you feel about trying something you made yourself?"
  • "What is your favorite part of cooking so far?"
  • "How can we clean up our cooking space after we're done?"
