Objective
By the end of this lesson, J will have chosen and read a selection from prose literature that explores a specific theme or emotion. J will also create a fun representation of their selected story to express their understanding and feelings about it.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and crayons or markers
- A selection of short stories or prose excerpts (can be original creations by J)
- Comfortable reading space
- Optional: A timer for reading sessions
Before the lesson, prepare a cozy reading area and gather a few short stories or prose excerpts that J might enjoy. Encourage J to think about their favorite emotions or themes.
Activities
- Story Selection: J will choose a short story or a prose excerpt that they feel connected to. This could be a story about friendship, adventure, or any emotion they like.
- Reading Time: J will read the selected story aloud, either to themselves or to an adult. This will help them practice their reading skills and understand the story better.
- Emotion Drawing: After reading, J will draw a picture that represents the main emotion or theme of the story. They can use crayons or markers to express their feelings creatively.
- Story Sharing: J will share their drawing and talk about why they chose that story and what it means to them. This encourages verbal expression and confidence.
- Creative Writing: If J feels inspired, they can write a short sentence or two about their own story related to the theme or emotion they explored. This can be a fun way to create original prose!
Talking Points
- "What story do you want to read today? Is it about something happy, sad, or exciting?"
- "Can you tell me what happens in the story? Who are the characters?"
- "How does the story make you feel? Can you show me that feeling with your drawing?"
- "What is your favorite part of the story? Why do you like it?"
- "If you could make your own story, what would it be about? Can you tell me one sentence?"
