Objective
By the end of this lesson, J will understand the basics of radio drama, including storytelling, voice acting, and sound effects. J will create a short radio drama using their imagination and voice, enhancing their creativity and communication skills.
Materials and Prep
- J's imagination
- A quiet space to record
- A device to record audio (optional, if available)
- Pencil and paper for jotting down ideas
Before the lesson, think about a simple story J enjoys or create a new story together. Discuss the types of characters and sounds that might be in the story.
Activities
-
Story Creation:
J will brainstorm a short story idea. Encourage them to think about characters, a setting, and what happens in the story. Ask questions like, "What is your main character like?" and "What adventure do they go on?"
-
Character Voices:
J will choose different voices for each character in their story. They can try making their voice higher or lower, or even add funny accents. This will help them understand how different voices can bring characters to life!
-
Sound Effects:
J can think of sounds that match the story, like a door creaking or birds chirping. They can make these sounds with their mouth or by using objects around the house. This will show them how sound effects enhance storytelling!
-
Recording the Drama:
Once everything is ready, J can perform their radio drama. If you have a recording device, record it! If not, just perform it together. This will give them a sense of accomplishment!
Talking Points
- "What do you think makes a story exciting?"
- "Can you make a funny voice for your character? Let’s hear it!"
- "What sound do you think we should use when the dragon flies?"
- "How does it feel to act like a character? Do you like being them?"
- "What was your favorite part of making the radio drama?"
