Objective
By the end of this lesson, J will be able to understand and perform both serious and humorous dramatic interpretations. J will learn how to use voice, body, and facial expressions to convey emotions and themes from selected pieces of literature.
Materials and Prep
- Short excerpts from a serious story or play (about 1-2 minutes long)
- Short excerpts from a humorous story or play (about 1-2 minutes long)
- Space to perform (a small area in the home)
- A timer (or a parent to help keep time)
- Mirror (to practice facial expressions)
Before the lesson, choose a couple of short excerpts that are age-appropriate and ensure the performance space is clear and safe for J to move around.
Activities
-
Warm-Up Games
Start with some fun warm-up activities! J can make different facial expressions in front of the mirror. Try "happy," "sad," "angry," and "surprised!" This will help J get comfortable using their face to show feelings.
-
Serious Dramatic Interpretation
Read the chosen serious excerpt together. Talk about the feelings and themes in the story. Then, J can practice performing it! Encourage J to use their voice and body to show the emotions of the characters.
-
Humorous Interpretation
Next, read the humorous excerpt together. Discuss what makes it funny! J will then perform this piece, focusing on using funny voices and silly movements to make the audience laugh.
-
Performance Time!
Have a mini performance! J can present both pieces to a family member. Use the timer to keep track of the time for each performance, making sure to stay within the limits. Celebrate J's efforts with applause!
Talking Points
- "What do you think this story is about?"
- "How can we show feelings with our voice? Can you make it loud or soft?"
- "Can you think of a funny face to make while we read this part?"
- "How can we use our bodies to act out what is happening in the story?"
- "Let’s pretend we are the characters! What would they say or do?"
