Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a deeper understanding of the works and techniques of a selected National artist, and will create an original piece inspired by that artist. Additionally, the student will engage in physical activities that enhance creativity and body awareness.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper (any size)
  • Pencils or pens
  • Markers or colored pencils
  • Open space for movement
  • Access to the internet for research

Before the lesson, the student should choose a National artist to focus on. It could be an artist like Georgia O'Keeffe, Jean-Michel Basquiat, or Grant Wood. Familiarity with their style and contributions to art will enhance the lesson.

Activities

  • Artist Research: The student will spend time researching the chosen National artist, focusing on their style, techniques, and notable works. This can be done through online resources, documentaries, or art books.
  • This activity will help the student understand the context and significance of the artist’s work, inspiring them for their own creation.

  • Movement and Expression: After the research, the student will engage in a physical activity such as a dance or free movement session. This can be done in a spacious area where they can express themselves freely.
  • This activity will encourage the student to connect their body movements with the emotions evoked by the artist's work, fostering a deeper connection to their creative process.

  • Art Creation: The student will create an original artwork inspired by the chosen artist. They can replicate a technique or incorporate elements of the artist's style into their own unique piece.
  • This hands-on activity allows the student to apply what they have learned and express their creativity, resulting in a personal connection to the art world.

Talking Points

  • "Art is a reflection of our experiences and emotions. How do you think your chosen artist's background influenced their work?"
  • "Consider the techniques used by your artist. What materials do you think they preferred, and how can you incorporate similar techniques into your artwork?"
  • "Movement can be a form of expression just like painting. How does moving your body make you feel in relation to the art you create?"
  • "Every artist has a story. What story do you want to tell through your artwork today?"
  • "Art can be therapeutic. How do you feel when you create? Does it help you express emotions or thoughts you might not say out loud?"
