Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic skills of a detective, including observation, questioning, and problem-solving. They will also engage in fun activities that stimulate their detective thinking and creativity.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and crayons
  • A small box or container for hiding "clues"
  • Everyday household items to use as clues (toys, buttons, etc.)
  • A timer (optional, can use a clock)

Before the lesson, prepare the "clues" by hiding them in the box or container. Make sure they are safe and age-appropriate items. Set up a small area where the student can work on their detective activities.

Activities

  • Clue Hunt: Create a mini scavenger hunt by hiding small items around the house. Give the student clues or a simple map to help them find each item. This will encourage their observation skills as they search for clues.

  • Detective Drawing: Ask the student to draw their own detective character. What do they look like? What tools do they use? This activity helps them express their creativity and think about what it means to be a detective.

  • Questioning Game: Pretend to be different characters (like a detective and a suspect). The student can ask questions to figure out what happened in a made-up story. This will help them practice their questioning skills.

  • Story Time: Read a simple detective story together. Afterward, discuss what the detective did to solve the mystery. This will help them understand the role of a detective in a fun way.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think a detective does?"
  • "Why is it important to pay attention to details?"
  • "Can you think of a time you solved a mystery? What did you do?"
  • "How can asking questions help us find answers?"
  • "What tools do you think a detective needs? Can you draw them?"
