Objective
By the end of this lesson, Rylee will understand the basic rules of railroad safety, including how to behave around trains and tracks. Rylee will also learn the importance of being safe and aware of her surroundings when near trains.
Materials and Prep
- No specific materials are required for this lesson.
- Prepare a safe space for activities, such as a living room or play area.
- Be ready to engage in discussions and role-playing scenarios about railroad safety.
Activities
- Train Stop Game:
Rylee will play a game where she pretends to be a train conductor. When you say "stop," she must freeze in place, just like a train would at a railroad crossing. This helps her understand the importance of stopping and looking.
- Coloring Railroad Signs:
Although no materials are needed, you can describe different railroad signs, like "Stop" and "Yield," and have Rylee draw them in the air or on imaginary paper. This helps her recognize important safety signs.
- Role-Playing Safety Scenarios:
Act out different situations where Rylee must make safe choices around trains. For example, pretend to be at a train crossing and discuss what to do. This will help her practice safety in a fun way.
Talking Points
- "When we see a train, we always stop and look both ways. Can you show me how to stop?"
- "Trains are very big and can go fast! We need to be careful and stay a safe distance away."
- "If we see a railroad sign, we must listen to it! Can you tell me what a 'Stop' sign means?"
- "It's important to never play on the tracks. They are for trains, not for playing! What are some fun places to play safely?"
