Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and apply basic math concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division through engaging activities and exercises on Duolingo Math.

Materials and Prep

  • Access to Duolingo Math application or website
  • Notebook and pencil for notes and practice problems
  • Timer (optional, for timed challenges)
  • A comfortable and quiet space to work

Before starting the lesson, ensure that the student has created an account on Duolingo Math and is familiar with how to navigate the app or website.

Activities

  • Math Scavenger Hunt

Set up a scavenger hunt where the student has to find items around the house that represent different math concepts (e.g., 5 apples for addition, 10 books for subtraction). After finding each item, they can solve a related problem on Duolingo Math.

  • Duolingo Math Challenge

Have the student complete a series of exercises on Duolingo Math, aiming to earn a certain number of points or complete a specific number of lessons. This can be turned into a friendly competition by timing how fast they can complete it.

  • Math Storytime

Encourage the student to create a short story that includes math problems. For example, "If I have 3 cookies and my friend gives me 2 more, how many do I have now?" After writing the story, they can illustrate it and share it with the family.

  • Math Art

Let the student draw a picture that represents a math problem. For example, they could draw 4 birds on a tree and then show what happens when 2 fly away. They can then write the corresponding math equation next to their artwork.

Talking Points

  • "Math is like a puzzle! Each piece helps us understand how numbers work together."
  • "When we add, we are putting things together. Can you think of something you can add?"
  • "Subtraction is like taking away. If you have 10 candies and eat 3, how many are left?"
  • "Multiplication is just repeated addition. If you have 4 groups of 2 apples, how many apples do you have in total?"
  • "Division is sharing equally. If you have 12 cookies and 4 friends, how many cookies does each friend get?"
  • "Using Duolingo Math is a fun way to practice! What is your favorite part about it?"
  • "Mistakes are okay! They help us learn. What did you learn from a mistake in math?"
  • "Math is everywhere! Can you spot any math in your daily life?"
  • "Let’s celebrate your progress! What goals do you want to achieve in math this week?"
  • "Remember, practice makes perfect! The more you practice, the better you’ll get!"
