Objective
By the end of this lesson, Davian will be able to understand basic addition and subtraction concepts through engaging inquiry-based activities. He will also improve his vocabulary by exploring new words related to math and storytelling.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil
- Coloring materials (crayons or markers)
- Timer (optional)
- Story prompt (create a simple story scenario)
Before the lesson, think of a fun story prompt that involves characters and scenarios Davian can relate to. Prepare a few math problems related to the story.
Activities
-
Story Math Adventure:
Davian will create a short story using a prompt you provide. In the story, he will include characters that need to solve math problems to move forward in their adventure. This will help him see how math can be part of storytelling.
-
Number Hunt:
Set a timer for 10 minutes and have Davian find items around the house that can be counted (like toys, books, or snacks). He will write down how many of each item he finds and then practice simple addition and subtraction with those numbers.
-
Math Drawing:
Davian will draw a picture that represents a math problem. For example, if he has 5 apples and gives away 2, he can draw 5 apples and then cross out 2. This visual representation will help him understand the concepts better.
Talking Points
- "Can you think of a fun adventure for our story? What kind of characters do you want to include?"
- "How can math help our characters solve problems in the story?"
- "What did you find during the number hunt? Can you add those numbers together?"
- "If you have 3 toys and you get 2 more, how many do you have now?"
- "Let's draw your math problem! What does it look like when you give away some apples?"
- "Why do you think math is important in everyday life?"
- "How did you feel about using math in our story? Was it fun?"
