Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand basic weather concepts, including different types of weather, how weather is measured, and the importance of weather in our daily lives. The student will also learn to identify different weather patterns and create their own weather report.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for note-taking and drawing
  • A clear area to observe the sky (window or outdoor space)
  • Access to a thermometer (if available, otherwise just discuss temperatures)
  • Preparation: Have a basic understanding of weather terms like temperature, precipitation, and wind.

Activities

  • Weather Observation:

Go outside or look out the window to observe the current weather. Ask the student to describe what they see, feel, and hear. Is it sunny, cloudy, rainy, or windy? How does it feel outside?

  • Create a Weather Chart:

Using paper, have the student draw a simple weather chart with symbols for sunny, rainy, cloudy, and snowy. They can use this chart to track the weather for a week.

  • Weather Report Role Play:

Encourage the student to pretend to be a weather reporter. They can use their weather chart to give a short report on the current weather and what to expect in the upcoming days.

  • Weather Word Search:

Create a word search with weather-related terms (like rain, sun, wind, snow). The student can find and circle the words to reinforce their vocabulary.

Talking Points

  • "What is weather? Weather is what it’s like outside right now. It can change every day!"
  • "Can you name some types of weather? We have sunny, rainy, snowy, and windy days!"
  • "How do we measure the temperature? We can use a thermometer to see how hot or cold it is!"
  • "Why is weather important? Weather affects what we wear and what we do each day!"
  • "What do clouds do? Clouds can bring us rain or snow, and they can also block the sun!"
  • "How can we prepare for bad weather? We can check the weather report and stay safe!"
  • "What do you think is the best weather for playing outside? Everyone has a favorite!"
  • "How do you feel when it’s sunny? Or when it’s raining? Weather can change our moods!"
