Objective

By the end of this lesson, Lucas will understand the importance of safety while playing Minecraft and how to protect himself from online dangers. He will learn about safe gaming practices and how to communicate effectively with others in the game.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for note-taking
  • Access to Minecraft (if possible, to demonstrate concepts)
  • Internet access for research
  • A list of common online dangers related to gaming

Before the lesson, review basic online safety rules and gather examples of safe and unsafe online behaviors related to gaming.

Activities

  • Discussion on Online Safety:

Start with a conversation about what online safety means. Ask Lucas what he thinks is important when playing games online. Write down his ideas and add any additional points about protecting personal information.

  • Role-Playing Scenarios:

Create some role-playing scenarios where Lucas has to decide what to do in different situations, like receiving a friend request from someone he doesn't know or encountering a player who is being mean. Discuss the best responses to each scenario.

  • Creating a Safety Poster:

Have Lucas create a colorful poster that includes important safety tips for playing Minecraft. This can include things like not sharing personal information, reporting bad behavior, and using privacy settings.

  • Safe Gaming Contract:

Help Lucas write a "Safe Gaming Contract" where he agrees to follow certain safety rules while playing Minecraft. This can include things like taking breaks, playing only with friends, and telling a parent if something makes him uncomfortable.

Talking Points

  • "When we play games online, we need to be careful about who we talk to. It's like meeting new people in real life—some can be nice, and some might not be!"
  • "Never share your real name, address, or phone number with anyone online. It’s important to keep your personal information safe!"
  • "If someone is being mean or making you uncomfortable in the game, you should tell a trusted adult or report them. You don’t have to deal with it alone!"
  • "Using privacy settings is like having a special door that only your friends can come through. It helps keep you safe!"
  • "It's okay to take breaks from gaming. It helps keep our minds fresh and gives us time to do other fun activities!"
  • "Always remember to play with friends you know in real life. It’s more fun and safer!"
  • "If you ever feel unsure about something online, it’s super important to ask a parent or guardian for help!"
  • "Creating a safety poster is a great way to remember the rules. You can hang it up in your gaming area as a reminder!"
