Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand what an estuary is, why it is important, and be able to identify some plants and animals that live in estuaries.

Materials and Prep

  • No special materials are needed for this lesson.
  • Be ready to explain what an estuary is in simple terms.
  • Prepare to engage the student with questions and fun facts about estuaries.

Activities

  • Draw an Estuary:

    Have the student draw a picture of an estuary. Encourage them to include water, land, and some plants and animals they think might live there.

  • Estuary Animal Charades:

    Play charades where the student acts out different animals that live in estuaries, like crabs, fish, or birds. You can guess what they are acting out!

  • Story Time:

    Make up a short story about a day in the life of a fish living in an estuary. Ask the student to add their ideas to the story to make it more fun!
