Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of digital editing, including how to manipulate images and create simple edits using a digital editing program. The student will gain hands-on experience and be able to create a fun edited image to share with friends and family.

Materials and Prep

  • A computer or tablet with internet access
  • A free online digital editing tool (e.g., Canva, Pixlr, or similar)
  • Images to edit (can be found online or taken by the student)
  • Basic knowledge of how to navigate the internet and open applications

Activities

  • Image Uploading: The student will start by choosing an image they want to edit. This could be a photo of their pet, a favorite place, or a fun drawing. They will learn how to upload this image into the editing tool.

  • Basic Edits: The student will explore basic editing tools such as cropping, rotating, and adjusting brightness. They will practice making these changes to their chosen image and see how it transforms.

  • Adding Text and Stickers: The student will learn how to add fun text and stickers to their image. They can choose a funny quote or a title for their picture, making it more personalized and creative.

  • Creating a Collage: The student will create a collage using multiple images. They will learn how to arrange the images, add borders, and make it visually appealing.

  • Sharing Their Work: Finally, the student will save their edited images and share them with family or friends. They can explain what they did and why they chose to make those edits.

Talking Points

  • "Digital editing lets us change pictures to make them look how we want! What do you think we can do with your image?"
  • "Cropping means cutting out parts of the image we don’t want. Let’s practice cropping your picture!"
  • "Adding text can make your image more fun! What kind of message do you want to share?"
  • "A collage is like a scrapbook on the computer! Let’s see how many images we can fit together!"
  • "When you share your edited image, it’s a way to show your creativity to others. Who do you want to show your work to?"
