Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the concept of place value in the base 10 system, using place value discs to visualize and manipulate numbers. The student will be able to identify the value of each digit in a number and demonstrate their understanding through fun activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Place value discs (can be drawn on paper or made from various materials)
  • Markers or crayons for coloring the discs
  • Paper for writing down numbers and calculations
  • Optional: A timer for some activities to add excitement

Before the lesson, ensure the student is familiar with basic numbers and can count at least to 100. Prepare the place value discs by creating three different sizes: large discs for hundreds, medium discs for tens, and small discs for ones.

Activities

  • Place Value Disc Creation:

    Have the student create their own place value discs using paper or any available materials. They can color the large discs blue for hundreds, medium discs green for tens, and small discs red for ones. This will help them visualize the different values.

  • Building Numbers:

    Using the place value discs, challenge the student to build different numbers. For example, ask them to create the number 237 using 2 large discs, 3 medium discs, and 7 small discs. This hands-on activity reinforces the concept of how numbers are composed of different place values.

  • Place Value Bingo:

    Create a bingo card with different numbers on it. Call out a number, and the student must use their place value discs to show that number. If they have the corresponding number on their bingo card, they can mark it. The first to mark a row wins!

  • Number Comparison:

    Write down two different numbers and have the student use their discs to represent both. Then, ask them to compare the two numbers and determine which is larger or smaller. This activity helps with understanding the value of digits in different positions.
