Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will have improved their spelling skills by learning new words, practicing them through various engaging activities, and understanding the rules of spelling through fun discussions.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil and paper for writing
- A list of 10 new spelling words (you can create this list based on the student’s interests or grade level)
- A timer (optional, can use a phone or watch)
- Space to move around for activities
Before the lesson, prepare a list of spelling words that the student can relate to and is eager to learn. Make sure they are age-appropriate and challenging enough to promote growth.
Activities
- Word Hunt: Hide the spelling words around the house and give the student clues to find them. Once they find a word, they should write it down and spell it out loud.
- Spelling Bee: Conduct a mini spelling bee where the student spells out each word aloud. You can alternate roles by spelling words back to them as well.
- Creative Sentences: Ask the student to create sentences using each of the spelling words. They can illustrate the sentences as well!
- Rhyming Words: For each spelling word, have the student come up with at least one rhyming word. Write them down together.
This activity encourages movement and engagement while reinforcing the spelling of each word. It can be made more exciting by setting a timer to see how quickly the student can find all the words.
This activity helps the student practice spelling in a fun and competitive way, encouraging them to think on their feet and recall the words quickly.
This promotes creativity and helps the student understand the context in which the words are used, making them more memorable.
This activity not only reinforces the spelling of the words but also enhances phonetic awareness and vocabulary.
Talking Points

- "Did you know that many words follow specific spelling rules? For example, 'i before e except after c.' Let's see if any of our words follow this rule!"
- "Using our spelling words in sentences helps us remember them better. Can you think of a fun or silly sentence with one of our words?"
- "Rhyming words can help us with spelling too! They often share similar sounds and letters. Can you think of any rhymes for our spelling words?"
