Objective

By the end of this lesson, Daniella and Alisia will be able to understand basic math concepts through music and movement. They will learn how to count beats in music while incorporating physical activity, making math fun and engaging!

Materials and Prep

  • No specific materials are required for this lesson.
  • Before starting, ensure there is enough space for movement and dancing.
  • Prepare a fun playlist of songs with a clear beat that the students enjoy.

Activities

  1. Beat Counting: Play a song from the playlist and ask Daniella and Alisia to listen for the beat. They can clap their hands or tap their feet to the rhythm. After a minute, pause the music and ask them how many beats they counted. This will help them understand counting in a fun way!

  2. Math Dance Moves: Create a simple dance routine where each move represents a number (for example, jump for 1, spin for 2). As they perform the dance, they will count the moves and practice simple addition by combining the moves together. This helps them associate numbers with physical actions.

  3. Musical Math Relay: Set up a small obstacle course. At each station, Daniella and Alisia must solve a math problem (like 2 + 3) before they can move on to the next station. Once they answer correctly, they can run to the next station and keep the energy high with music playing in the background!

Talking Points

  • "Did you hear the beat in that song? Every time you clap, you are counting!"
  • "When we dance, we can turn numbers into fun moves! What move do you want to create for the number 3?"
  • "Math is everywhere, even in music! How many beats do you think are in this song?"
  • "When we solve math problems, we are like detectives looking for answers! Ready to solve some mysteries at the relay?"
  • "Movement helps our brains think better! Let’s see how many dance moves we can create together!"
