Objective
By the end of this lesson, Arnia will understand the basic biology and behavior of snails and slugs, including their habitats, diets, and life cycles. She will also learn to appreciate these creatures and their roles in the ecosystem.
Materials and Prep
- Notebook or drawing paper
- Pencil or colored pencils
- Access to a garden or outdoor area to observe snails and slugs
- Internet access for research (if applicable)
Before the lesson, it would be helpful to gather some information about the different types of snails and slugs, as well as their habitats. You can also prepare a list of questions to guide your research.
Activities
-
Observation Walk: Take a walk in the garden or a nearby park to look for snails and slugs. Observe their behavior and note where you find them. Encourage Arnia to draw or take notes about what she sees.
-
Snail and Slug Factsheet: After the observation walk, create a factsheet about snails and slugs. Include information such as their habitat, diet, and interesting facts. Arnia can illustrate her factsheet with drawings of the creatures she observed.
-
Life Cycle Art: Teach Arnia about the life cycle of a snail or slug. She can create a visual representation of the life cycle using drawings or diagrams, showing the different stages from egg to adult.
-
Creative Storytelling: Encourage Arnia to write a short story from the perspective of a snail or slug. What adventures might they have? This will help her use her imagination while learning about these creatures.
Talking Points
- "Did you know that snails and slugs are both part of a group called mollusks? They have soft bodies and are often covered by a shell!"
- "Snails have shells that protect them, but slugs do not. Can you think of why that might be?"
- "Both snails and slugs love to eat plants, fruits, and vegetables. What do you think happens if they eat something that's not good for them?"
- "Snails and slugs are important for the environment because they help break down decaying plants. Why do you think that's important?"
- "The life cycle of a snail starts with eggs. After hatching, they go through different stages until they become adults. How many stages do you think there are?"
