Objective

By the end of this lesson, Daniella and Alisia will have a fun and engaging understanding of Ancient Egyptian culture, including their daily life, beliefs, and significant achievements such as the pyramids and hieroglyphs.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or markers
  • A large piece of cardboard or poster board
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (if needed)
  • Simple props for role-playing (like scarves or hats)

Before the lesson, it would be helpful to have a basic understanding of Ancient Egypt, including some famous pharaohs, the pyramids, and the Nile River. This will help guide the discussion and activities.

Activities

  • Hieroglyph Art: Daniella and Alisia will create their own hieroglyphs using paper and colored pencils. They can design symbols that represent their names or favorite things, and then share their creations with each other.
  • Pyramid Building Challenge: Using the cardboard, the girls will work together to build a small pyramid. They can discuss the purpose of pyramids in Ancient Egypt while they construct their model.
  • Role-Playing Egyptian Life: Daniella and Alisia will dress up with props and act out a day in the life of an Ancient Egyptian. They can take turns being a pharaoh, a farmer, or a merchant, and discuss their roles and responsibilities.
  • Nile River Adventure: The girls will create a simple map of the Nile River and mark important locations such as cities and pyramids. They can then tell a story about a journey along the river.

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that Ancient Egyptians believed in many gods and goddesses? They thought these gods controlled everything, from the sun to the Nile River!"
  • "The pyramids were built as tombs for the pharaohs. Can you imagine how long it took to build one? Some took over 20 years!"
  • "Hieroglyphs are a special kind of writing that uses pictures. Each symbol can represent a sound or a whole word. Let's create our own!"
  • "The Nile River was super important for Ancient Egyptians. It provided water for drinking and farming, and it was like a highway for trade!"
  • "Pharaohs were like kings and queens. They had a lot of power and were believed to be chosen by the gods. What do you think it would be like to be a pharaoh?"
