Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic skills to create loom band bracelets.

Materials and Prep

  • Loom bands
  • Loom board
  • Hook tool
  • Clip
  • Mathematics workbook

Prior knowledge: Basic understanding of addition and subtraction.

Activities

  1. Review addition and subtraction: Solve a few simple arithmetic problems together using numbers that can be represented by different colored loom bands.
  2. Create a pattern: Discuss and plan a pattern for the loom band bracelet, considering the number of colors and the sequence of colors to be used.
  3. Counting and measuring: Use the loom board to start creating the bracelet, counting the number of bands needed for each row and measuring the length of the bracelet.
  4. Add and subtract bands: Apply addition and subtraction skills to determine the number of bands needed to complete each row and to adjust the length of the bracelet.
  5. Finish and secure the bracelet: Use the clip to secure the completed bracelet and discuss the final length.

Second Grade Talking Points

  • "Mathematics is all around us, even in fun activities like making loom band bracelets."
  • "Addition is when we combine two or more numbers to find the total. For example, if we have 3 red bands and 2 blue bands, how many bands do we have in total?"
  • "Subtraction is when we take away one number from another. For example, if we have 5 bands and we remove 2 bands, how many bands are left?"
  • "When creating a loom band bracelet, we can use different colors and create patterns. A pattern is a sequence that repeats. Can you think of a pattern we can use for our bracelet?"
  • "Counting is important when making a loom band bracelet. We need to count the number of bands needed for each row to create the design we planned."
  • "Measuring is also important. We need to measure the length of the bracelet to make sure it fits comfortably on our wrist."
  • "Sometimes we may need to add or subtract bands to adjust the length of the bracelet. This helps us make sure it is just the right size."
  • "Once we finish making the bracelet, we can secure it with a clip to keep it in place. We can also measure the final length to see how long it turned out."
