Objective
By the end of this lesson, Paige will have a basic understanding of fractions through fun and engaging activities that involve sharing and dividing items into parts, helping her to recognize simple fractions in her everyday life.
Materials and Prep
- Two different types of snacks (e.g., a banana and some crackers)
- A large piece of paper
- A crayon or marker
- Some toys or blocks for counting
Before the lesson, make sure to wash the snacks and prepare a comfortable space for Paige to sit and play. Familiarize yourself with simple fraction concepts like "half" and "whole".
Activities
-
Snack Sharing: Use the banana and crackers to demonstrate fractions. Cut the banana in half and show Paige how you have two pieces. Ask her to share one piece with her stuffed animal or a toy.
-
Draw and Color: On the large piece of paper, draw a big circle and divide it into two parts. Color one half and leave the other half blank. Explain to Paige that this is "half" of the circle.
-
Block Counting: Use toys or blocks to create groups. For example, stack 4 blocks and then take away 2. Show Paige that 2 blocks are left and explain that 2 is "half" of 4.
Talking Points
- "Look, we have a whole banana! Now, let’s cut it in half. Now we have two pieces!"
- "This is one part, and this is another part. Together, they make one whole!"
- "Can you see how we have 4 blocks? If we take away 2 blocks, we have half left!"
- "This circle is big! But look, we made it into two parts. One part is colored, and one part is not. That’s half!"
- "When we share, we can give one piece to you and one piece to your toy. Sharing is fun!"
