Objective

By the end of this lesson, Daniella and Alisia will have explored the world of pumpkins through art, language, math, and science. They will create a pumpkin-themed art project, write a short story or poem about pumpkins, solve math problems related to pumpkins, and learn about the growth and biology of pumpkins.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper for writing and drawing
  • Colored pencils or crayons for coloring
  • Calculator for math activities
  • Access to a garden or outdoor area to observe pumpkins (if available)
  • Books or online resources about pumpkins (optional for extra research)

Before the lesson, make sure to familiarize yourself with basic pumpkin facts and have a few fun pumpkin-related math problems ready!

Activities

  • Art Activity: Create a Pumpkin Collage
  • Daniella and Alisia will use colored pencils or crayons to draw different types of pumpkins. They can create a collage by cutting out pictures of pumpkins from magazines or drawing their own. Encourage them to be creative with colors and designs!

  • English Activity: Write a Pumpkin Story or Poem
  • Each student will write a short story or poem about pumpkins. They can choose to write about a pumpkin's journey from seed to harvest or create a fun story about a pumpkin character. Encourage them to use descriptive words to make their writing vivid!

  • Math Activity: Pumpkin Math Problems
  • Prepare some math problems related to pumpkins. For example, "If one pumpkin weighs 5 pounds, how much do 4 pumpkins weigh?" or "If you carve 3 pumpkins and have 2 left, how many do you have in total?" They can solve these problems using their calculators.

  • Science Activity: Learn About Pumpkin Growth
  • Discuss the life cycle of a pumpkin. Talk about how pumpkins grow from seeds to plants, then to flowers, and finally to pumpkins. If possible, go outside to observe any pumpkins growing in the garden or look up pictures online.

Talking Points

  • About Pumpkins: "Did you know that pumpkins are actually fruits? They grow from flowers!"
  • Pumpkin Life Cycle: "Let's talk about how a tiny seed becomes a big pumpkin! Can you guess what happens first?"
  • Fun Facts: "Pumpkins can be orange, white, green, and even blue! What's your favorite color of pumpkin?"
  • Math Connection: "If we have 10 pumpkins and we give away 2, how many do we have left? Let's figure it out together!"
  • Art and Creativity: "Art is a fun way to express how we feel about pumpkins. What do you want your pumpkin collage to say?"
  • Writing Stories: "Writing stories helps us share our ideas. What adventure will your pumpkin go on?"
