Objective
By the end of this lesson plan, students will have successfully designed and built a personalized item for their rooms. They will create a design brief, draw and label their project, and analyze the outcome of their work. This project will integrate skills in woodwork, electrical work, welding, and design, fostering creativity and practical skills in technology (STEM).
Materials and Prep
- Wood (various sizes)
- Basic electrical components (wires, switches, batteries)
- Welding materials (if applicable; safety gear is essential)
- Drawing materials (paper, pencils, markers)
- Measuring tools (ruler, measuring tape)
- Safety equipment (goggles, gloves)
- Design brief template (can be created as a worksheet)
Before starting the project, ensure all safety protocols are understood, especially for welding and electrical work. Discuss the importance of measuring and planning before building.
Activities
-
1. Create a Design Brief: Students will outline their project idea, including the purpose of the item, materials needed, and a rough sketch. This will help them visualize their project and plan the steps necessary to complete it.
-
2. Drawing and Labeling: Once the design brief is complete, students will create a detailed drawing of their item, labeling each part. This will help them understand the components involved and how they fit together.
-
3. Build the Item: Using the materials gathered, students will start building their item, applying skills in woodwork, electrical work, and welding as necessary. Encourage them to follow their design brief and make adjustments as needed.
-
4. Analyze the Outcome: After completing the project, students will reflect on their work. They will assess what went well, what challenges they faced, and how they can improve in future projects. This will involve discussing their design brief and whether the final product met their initial goals.
Talking Points
- "Why is it important to plan your project before starting to build?"
- "How can drawing and labeling your design help you during the building process?"
- "What safety precautions should we take when working with tools and materials?"
- "What challenges did you face while building your item, and how did you overcome them?"
- "In what ways can you improve your design for next time?"
