Objective

By the end of this lesson, Kaluna will learn about the Lewis and Clark expedition, understand basic math concepts related to distance and time, explore scientific observations made during the journey, and discuss the importance of cooperation in social studies.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • Timer or clock
  • Map of the United States (can be drawn on paper)
  • Simple math problems related to distance
  • Knowledge about the Lewis and Clark expedition (basic facts)

Activities

  • Map Drawing:

Kaluna will create a simple map showing the route of Lewis and Clark from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean. She can use colored pencils to mark important stops along the way.

  • Distance Calculation:

Using the map, Kaluna will measure distances between different points (e.g., St. Louis to the Pacific) and solve simple math problems to find out how long it might take to travel that distance.

  • Nature Observation:

Kaluna will pretend to be Lewis or Clark and write down observations about plants and animals she sees outside. She can draw pictures and write a few sentences about her findings.

  • Teamwork Discussion:

Kaluna will discuss the importance of teamwork in the expedition. She can think of ways she can work with others in her own life, like helping her family or friends.

Talking Points

  • "Do you know who Lewis and Clark are? They were explorers who traveled across America to find a route to the Pacific Ocean!"
  • "Why do you think they needed to measure distances? It helps us understand how far they traveled and how long it took!"
  • "What kinds of plants and animals do you think they saw on their journey? Let's pretend to be explorers and observe nature!"
  • "Lewis and Clark had a team to help them. Why is it important to work together? We can do more when we help each other!"
