Objective
By the end of this lesson, OllyRoRo will understand what the Northern Lights are, where they can be seen, and why they happen. OllyRoRo will also create a colorful artwork inspired by the Northern Lights!
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or colored pencils
- Black or dark blue construction paper (optional)
- Access to a comfortable space for activities
Before the lesson, it’s helpful to know that the Northern Lights are colorful lights that appear in the sky, mostly in places near the North Pole. They are caused by the sun's energy interacting with the Earth's atmosphere!
Activities
- Story Time: Read a simple story or watch a short video about the Northern Lights. Discuss what OllyRoRo thinks about the colors and shapes in the sky.
- Art Project: Using crayons or colored pencils, OllyRoRo will create a drawing of the Northern Lights. Encourage OllyRoRo to use bright colors on the dark paper to mimic the lights in the sky.
- Color Mixing: Explore mixing colors together to create new colors. OllyRoRo can mix blue and green to see what happens, just like the colors of the Northern Lights!
- Movement Activity: Pretend to be the Northern Lights! OllyRoRo can wave their arms and move around the room, showing how the lights dance in the sky.
