Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will have a deeper understanding of the themes and characters in "The Green Ember," as well as the ability to express their thoughts creatively through writing and art.
Materials and Prep
- Notebook or journal for writing
- Pencils or pens
- Colored pencils or markers for drawing
- Access to "The Green Ember" book (if not already read, select a few chapters to focus on)
- Printouts of character descriptions (optional)
Before the lesson, ensure the student has read at least the first few chapters of "The Green Ember" to familiarize themselves with the story and characters.
Activities
- Character Exploration:
The student will choose their favorite character from the book and write a short character profile. This profile should include the character's name, traits, and a brief summary of their role in the story.
- Creative Drawing:
After discussing the character, the student will create a drawing of that character, illustrating their personality and key features. Encourage them to think about colors and expressions that match the character's traits.
- Story Reimagining:
The student will write a short alternate ending or a new adventure for their chosen character. This will help them think critically about the story and how different choices could change the outcome.
- Group Discussion:
Engage in a discussion about the themes of friendship, bravery, and loyalty in "The Green Ember." The student can share their thoughts and listen to different perspectives.
Talking Points
- "What do you think makes the main character so brave? Can you think of a moment in the story that shows this?"
- "How do the friendships in the book help the characters face challenges? Can you relate this to any friendships in your life?"
- "What do you think the author wants us to learn about loyalty? Why is it important in the story?"
- "If you could ask the author one question about the story, what would it be and why?"
- "How do the illustrations (if any) help you understand the story better? Do you think they add to the adventure?"
- "What do you think the title 'The Green Ember' represents? How does it relate to the characters and their journey?"
