Objective

By the end of this lesson, Saskia will have a better understanding of the themes of friendship and magic in literature, while also learning about the historical context of witches and witchcraft. She will create her own magical character inspired by "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" and relate it to historical beliefs about witches.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook or sketchbook for drawing and writing
  • Pens or colored pencils
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (if desired)
  • Printed or written summary of "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" episodes
  • Information about historical witchcraft (can be summarized from memory)

Activities

  1. Create Your Own Witch: Saskia will design her own witch character, including her name, special powers, and a backstory. She can illustrate her character and write a short paragraph describing her magical abilities and personality.

  2. Witchcraft Timeline: Together, create a timeline that highlights key events in history related to witchcraft. This can include famous witch trials, beliefs about witches in different cultures, and how these beliefs have changed over time.

  3. Friendship Magic: Discuss the importance of friendship in "Sabrina the Teenage Witch." Saskia can write a short essay on how friendship is portrayed in the show and compare it to her own friendships.

  4. Role-Playing Scene: Choose a favorite scene from "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" and act it out. Saskia can take on the role of Sabrina or another character, using her own words to create a fun twist on the original scene.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think makes Sabrina such a relatable character? Is it her magic, or is it her friendships?"
  • "Can you think of any real-life examples of how people have been treated unfairly because they were different? How does this relate to the history of witches?"
  • "Why do you think stories about witches are so popular? What do they teach us about our own lives?"
  • "How does magic in stories help us explore our imagination? Can you think of a time when you wished you had magical powers?"
  • "In what ways do you think friendship can be a kind of magic? How do friends support each other in tough times?"
