Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply basic math concepts to real-world scenarios involving dogs, as well as enhance their English skills through writing and creative expression related to their interest in dogs.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pen/pencil for writing and calculations
  • Access to a calculator (optional)
  • Dog-related books or articles for reading (optional)
  • Internet access for research (if applicable)

Before the lesson, it would be helpful for the student to think about their favorite dog breeds and any specific interests they have related to dogs, such as dog care, training, or dog sports.

Activities

  • Dog Breed Math Challenge:

Research three different dog breeds and find out their average weight, height, and lifespan. Create a math problem for each breed, such as calculating the total weight of three dogs of that breed or the average lifespan of two breeds combined.

  • Write a Dog Care Guide:

Write a short guide on how to take care of a specific dog breed. Include sections on diet, exercise, grooming, and training. This will help improve writing skills while focusing on a topic of interest.

  • Dog Adoption Budget:

Create a budget for adopting a dog, including initial costs (adoption fee, supplies) and monthly expenses (food, vet visits, grooming). Use basic math to calculate total costs over the first year.

  • Dog-Themed Creative Writing:

Write a short story or poem from the perspective of a dog. This activity encourages creative writing and helps develop narrative skills.
