Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the significant changes brought about by the expansion of Roman power, including its impact on culture, governance, and society. The student will also be able to discuss how these changes influenced future civilizations.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for notes
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (if needed)
  • Printable maps of the Roman Empire at its height
  • Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, etc.) for creative projects
  • Time to explore online resources or library books about Roman history

Before the lesson, ensure the student has a basic understanding of what the Roman Empire is and some key figures associated with it, such as Julius Caesar and Augustus.

Activities

  • Map Exploration:

    Using printable maps, the student will identify key territories acquired by Rome during its expansion. They will color-code these areas to show how the empire grew over time.

  • Creative Storytelling:

    The student will write a short story from the perspective of a Roman soldier or a citizen during the expansion period. This will help them understand the personal impact of Rome's growth.

  • Debate on Governance:

    The student will prepare arguments for and against the expansion of Roman power. This will encourage critical thinking about the effects of imperialism.

  • Artistic Representation:

    The student will create a visual representation (such as a poster or a digital slideshow) showcasing the cultural changes that occurred due to Roman expansion, including art, architecture, and religion.
