Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify different types of rocks, understand the rock cycle, and describe how rocks are formed and transformed over time.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pencil for notes and drawings
  • Outdoor space or a garden for rock collection
  • Access to a computer or smartphone for research (optional)
  • Simple rock identification guide (can be created using online resources)

Activities

  • Rock Hunt:

Take a walk outside and collect different types of rocks. Try to find at least five different kinds. Make sure to observe their colors, shapes, and sizes!

  • Rock Classification:

Using the collected rocks, classify them into three categories: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Use the rock identification guide to help you.

  • Rock Cycle Diagram:

Create a colorful diagram of the rock cycle in your notebook. Illustrate how rocks change from one type to another over time.

  • Rock Stories:

Choose one rock you found and create a story about its journey. Where did it come from? How did it get to where you found it? What changes has it gone through?

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that rocks are categorized into three main types? They are igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic!"
  • "The rock cycle is a process that shows how rocks change from one type to another. It can take millions of years!"
  • "Igneous rocks form from cooled lava or magma. Can you think of a place where you might find them?"
  • "Sedimentary rocks are made from tiny pieces of other rocks or minerals that have been pressed together. Have you seen any layers in rocks?"
  • "Metamorphic rocks are formed when existing rocks change due to heat and pressure. Imagine what that would feel like!"
  • "Every rock has a story to tell! What do you think your rocks would say if they could talk?"
