Objective

By the end of this lesson, Fiona will explore various styles of poetry, including odes, rhyming poems, and modern rap lyrics. She will understand how music can be considered poetry and will create her own poem inspired by these styles.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook or journal for writing
  • Pens or pencils
  • Access to music (preferably a playlist of different genres including rap)
  • Printed examples of odes and rhyming poems (optional)
  • Fiona's favorite song lyrics for inspiration

Activities

  1. Poetry Exploration: Begin by reading a few examples of odes and rhyming poems. Discuss their structure and themes. Ask Fiona to identify what emotions and images the poems evoke.

  2. Music as Poetry: Listen to a selection of songs, including modern rap. Discuss how the lyrics tell a story and convey emotions, comparing them to traditional poetry. Encourage Fiona to think critically about the poetic elements in the lyrics.

  3. Create Your Own Poem: Using the styles discussed, Fiona will compose her own poem. She can choose to write an ode, a rhyming poem, or even a rap. Remind her to focus on imagery, emotion, and rhythm in her writing.

  4. Share and Reflect: Have Fiona read her poem aloud. Discuss how she chose her words and what she wanted to express. This will help her understand the impact of poetry on both the writer and the audience.
