Objective

By the end of this lesson, Vera will learn about the local environment and community while taking a walk. She will identify different types of plants, animals, and landmarks in her neighborhood, and understand how they relate to science and social studies.

Materials and Prep

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • A notebook or paper
  • A pencil or pen
  • A water bottle
  • Optional: A camera or smartphone for pictures

Before the lesson, make sure to choose a safe walking route in your neighborhood that includes parks, gardens, or interesting landmarks. Check the weather to ensure a pleasant walking experience.

Activities

  • Nature Scavenger Hunt: Create a list of items to find during the walk, such as different types of leaves, flowers, or insects. Vera can check off each item as she finds them!

  • Landmark Exploration: While walking, discuss the different buildings and landmarks you see. Vera can take notes or draw pictures of her favorites and learn about their history.

  • Animal Spotting: Look for birds, squirrels, or other animals. Vera can observe their behavior and write down what she sees. You can discuss why animals live in certain areas.

  • Reflective Journal: After the walk, have Vera write about her favorite part of the walk in her notebook. She can draw a picture or describe what she learned about the environment and community.

Talking Points

  • "What types of plants do you see around us? Can you name any?"
  • "Why do you think certain animals live in this area? What do they need to survive?"
  • "Can you spot any landmarks? What do you think is special about them?"
  • "How do you feel when you are outside? What do you like most about nature?"
  • "What is one new thing you learned today on our walk?"
