Objective

By the end of this lesson, Vera will understand the basic steps of doing laundry, including sorting clothes, using the washing machine, and folding clean clothes. She will also learn about the importance of laundry and how to take care of her clothes.

Materials and Prep

  • Dirty laundry (a mix of colors, whites, and delicates)
  • Access to a washing machine (if available)
  • Detergent (if available)
  • Drying area (can be a clothesline or drying rack)
  • Folding area (a flat surface like a table)

Before the lesson, make sure to gather dirty laundry and find a safe space to do the activities. If using a washing machine, ensure that Vera is supervised while operating it.

Activities

  • Sorting Game

Vera will sort the dirty laundry into different piles: whites, colors, and delicates. This will help her understand how to prevent colors from bleeding and how to care for different fabrics.

  • Washing Machine Adventure

If available, Vera will learn how to use the washing machine. She will measure and add the detergent, select the correct settings, and start the machine. This hands-on experience will make her feel like a laundry expert!

  • Drying and Folding Challenge

Once the laundry is clean, Vera will hang the clothes to dry or help transfer them to the dryer. Afterward, she will fold the clean clothes, learning how to make neat piles and organize them by type.

Talking Points

  • "Why do we sort clothes before washing them?" - This helps prevent colors from mixing and keeps our whites bright!"
  • "What happens if we wash everything together?" - Sometimes, colors can bleed, and we might end up with pink socks!"
  • "Why is it important to read the labels on clothes?" - Labels tell us how to wash and dry them properly so they last longer!"
  • "How do we measure the right amount of detergent?" - Using too much can make clothes sticky, and using too little might not clean them well!"
  • "What is the difference between air drying and using a dryer?" - Air drying is gentle and saves energy, while a dryer is faster!"
  • "Why do we fold clothes after washing?" - Folding helps keep our clothes neat and makes it easier to find what we need!"
  • "Can you think of any other chores that help us take care of our clothes?" - Maybe ironing or putting them away in the closet!"
  • "How do you feel about doing laundry now?" - It's a fun way to help out and learn new skills!"
