Objective

By the end of this lesson, Carter will understand the different types of clouds, how they form, and why they are important to our weather. He will also create his own cloud art and share what he learned.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or colored pencils
  • A clear blue sky or a picture of a sky (optional for reference)
  • Access to a window to observe clouds

Before the lesson, make sure to check the weather and see if there are any clouds in the sky. This will help make the lesson more interactive!

Activities

  • Cloud Observation:

Carter will spend some time looking outside to observe the clouds. He can describe what shapes and types of clouds he sees and how they make him feel.

  • Cloud Types Drawing:

Using crayons or colored pencils, Carter will draw different types of clouds (cumulus, stratus, cirrus, etc.) and label them. This will help him remember what each type looks like.

  • Cloud Story:

Carter can create a short story about a cloud's journey in the sky. He can use his imagination to describe where the cloud goes and what it sees along the way!

Talking Points

  • "Clouds are made of tiny water droplets or ice crystals. Can you see how they float in the sky?"
  • "There are different types of clouds! For example, cumulus clouds look like fluffy cotton balls. Can you draw one?"
  • "Stratus clouds are like a blanket covering the sky. Have you ever seen a cloudy day where the sky looks gray?"
  • "Cirrus clouds are very high up and look thin and wispy. They often mean that the weather is going to change!"
  • "Clouds are important because they help bring us rain and snow. Why do you think we need rain?"
  • "Did you know that clouds can also affect how warm or cold it is outside? What do you think happens when there are lots of clouds?"
  • "Every cloud has a story. If you were a cloud, where would you want to travel?"
  • "Next time you look at the sky, try to remember the names of the clouds you see. It’s like a treasure hunt!"
