Objective

By the end of this lesson, S. will have developed a short story using creative writing techniques, including character development, setting, and plot structure. S. will also gain confidence in expressing ideas creatively and sharing them with others.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen and notebook (or any writing surface)
  • Timer (for timed writing exercises)
  • Creative Writing Prompts (can be created prior to the lesson)
  • Comfortable space for writing without distractions

Before the lesson, prepare a list of creative writing prompts that can inspire S. to explore different themes and genres. Ensure S. has a quiet and comfortable space to write.

Activities

  • Warm-Up Free Writing (10 minutes)

Start with a free writing session where S. writes continuously for 10 minutes on any topic that comes to mind. The goal is to let thoughts flow without worrying about grammar or structure.

  • Character Creation (15 minutes)

Using a creative writing prompt, S. will develop a character. Encourage the creation of a character profile that includes their name, age, background, and a unique trait. This will help in making the character relatable and engaging.

  • Setting the Scene (15 minutes)

    S. will write a descriptive paragraph about the setting for the character's story. Focus on sensory details—what can be seen, heard, smelled, and felt in that environment.

  • Plot Development (20 minutes)

Guide S. to outline the main conflict or challenge the character will face. This should include a beginning, middle, and end, helping to structure the story. Encourage S. to think creatively about how the character will overcome the challenge.

  • Sharing and Feedback (20 minutes)

Finally, S. will read their story to you or a family member. After sharing, provide constructive feedback focusing on strengths and areas for improvement. This will help S. gain confidence in sharing creative work.
