Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a better understanding of the themes and characters in the first chapter of "The Giver." They will also express their thoughts through art and writing, creating a personal connection to the story.

Materials and Prep

  • Copy of "The Giver" by Lois Lowry (first chapter)
  • Pencil and paper for writing and drawing
  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • Art supplies like stickers or stamps (optional)

Before starting the lesson, read the first chapter of "The Giver" to familiarize yourself with the characters and setting. Think about how you can relate to the feelings of the main character, Jonas.

Activities

  • Character Drawing: After reading the first chapter, the student will draw a picture of Jonas. They can think about what he looks like, how he feels, and what kind of world he lives in.
  • Feelings Journal: The student will write a short paragraph about how Jonas feels at the beginning of the story. They can also share a time when they felt a similar emotion.
  • Creative Storytelling: The student will create a short story about a day in Jonas's life, imagining what he might do in his community. They can illustrate their story with drawings.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think Jonas is feeling at the beginning of the story? Can you relate to that feeling?"
  • "Why do you think the author chose to make Jonas the main character? What makes him special?"
  • "What do you think is different about Jonas's world compared to ours? Can you name some things that are the same?"
  • "How do colors and drawings help us understand the story better? What colors would you use to show Jonas's feelings?"
  • "If you could ask Jonas one question, what would it be? Why would you want to know that?"
  • "How do you think Jonas's life might change as the story goes on? What are you excited to find out?"
  • "What is your favorite part about creating art or writing stories? How does it make you feel?"
