Materials and Prep

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened

Before starting, ensure the oven is preheated to 350°F (175°C) and that all ingredients are at room temperature for better mixing.

Activities

  • Measuring Ingredients: The student will measure out all the ingredients needed for the cupcake batter. This will help them understand the importance of accuracy in baking.

  • Baking the Cupcakes: The student will pour the batter into cupcake liners and place them in the muffin tin. They will learn about oven safety and the importance of timing.
  • Decorating the Cupcakes: Once the cupcakes are cooled, the student will use buttercream frosting and mini chocolate chips or sprinkles to create butterfly designs. This will allow them to express their creativity!
  • Taste Testing: Finally, the student will get to enjoy their butterfly cupcakes! They can share them with family or friends, discussing the flavors and textures they experienced.

Talking Points

  • "Do you know why we cream butter and sugar together? It helps to incorporate air, making our cupcakes light and fluffy!"
  • "What do you think happens if we overmix the batter? It can make our cupcakes tough instead of soft!"
  • "Oven safety is super important! Always use oven mitts and be careful when opening the oven door."
  • "Decorating is where we can really show our personality! What colors do you want to use for your butterflies?"
  • "Remember, baking is also about having fun and being creative. Don't be afraid to try new things!"
  • "Taste testing is the best part! What flavors do you think go well together?"
