Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply geometric concepts to create digital art.

Materials and Prep

  • Computer or tablet with drawing software
  • Internet access
  • Pencil and paper (optional)

No prior knowledge of geometry is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Create a Geometric Animal

Using your drawing software, create a digital artwork of an animal using only geometric shapes. Start by selecting a base shape, such as a square, circle, or triangle, and use it as a building block to construct the animal's body, head, and limbs. Experiment with different sizes, rotations, and combinations of shapes to achieve the desired result. Add details and color to bring your geometric animal to life!

  2. Design a Geometric Landscape

Imagine a unique landscape and use geometric shapes to design it digitally. Start with a blank canvas and use shapes like squares, triangles, and rectangles to represent mountains, buildings, trees, and other elements of the landscape. Pay attention to the relationships between the shapes, such as overlapping, intersecting, or aligning them. Experiment with different colors, textures, and patterns to make your geometric landscape visually appealing.

  3. Transform Objects with Symmetry

Explore the concept of symmetry by selecting an object or shape and transforming it using reflection or rotation. Take a photograph or find an image online of an object that interests you, such as a flower, butterfly, or architectural structure. Use your drawing software to duplicate and mirror the object to create a symmetrical composition. Alternatively, rotate the object around a point to create rotational symmetry. Play around with different transformations to see how they affect the overall design.

Sixth Grade Talking Points

  • "Geometry is a branch of mathematics that deals with shapes, sizes, and properties of figures."
  • "Geometric shapes have specific attributes, such as sides, angles, and symmetry, that can be used to describe and classify them."
  • "In digital art, geometric shapes can be combined and manipulated to create visually appealing compositions."
  • "Symmetry is an important concept in geometry and art. It refers to a balanced arrangement of shapes or objects."
  • "By understanding geometric concepts, you can enhance your digital art skills and create more interesting and visually appealing compositions."
