Objective

By the end of this lesson, Leisline will understand the different types of materials, their properties, and how pollution affects these materials and our environment. Leisline will also learn about the importance of recycling and reducing waste.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for note-taking
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research
  • Recyclable materials (plastic bottles, cardboard, etc.) from home
  • Access to a safe outdoor space for experiments (if possible)

Before the lesson, Leisline should gather recyclable materials from around the house and familiarize themselves with basic terms related to materials and pollution, such as "biodegradable," "recycling," and "waste."

Activities

  • Material Scavenger Hunt

Leisline will go on a scavenger hunt around the house or yard to find different materials (plastic, metal, paper, etc.). For each material, they will note its properties (e.g., weight, flexibility) and where it is commonly found.

  • Pollution Impact Experiment

Using the gathered recyclable materials, Leisline will create a simple experiment to demonstrate how pollution affects materials. For example, they can leave a plastic bottle outside for a week and observe any changes.

  • Recycling Art Project

Leisline will use the recyclable materials to create a piece of art. This project will encourage creativity while reinforcing the importance of reusing materials and reducing waste.

  • Research and Presentation

Leisline will choose one type of material and research its environmental impact, including how it contributes to pollution. They will prepare a short presentation to share their findings.

Talking Points

  • "What are the different types of materials we use every day, and how do they impact our environment?"
  • "Can you think of some examples of pollution that come from these materials?"
  • "Why is it important to recycle and reduce our waste?"
  • "How does pollution affect the properties of materials?"
  • "What can we do to help reduce pollution in our community?"
