Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify key changes and continuities in Australian society, understand the causes and effects of these changes, and articulate their significance in a creative and engaging way.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen or pencil
  • Whiteboard or large paper for brainstorming
  • Markers or colored pencils
  • Access to a timeline template (can be drawn manually)
  • Sticky notes
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (optional)

Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with major events in Australian history, such as colonization, the Gold Rush, Federation, and significant social movements.

Activities

  • Timeline Creation:

The student will create a timeline of significant events in Australian history. They will mark key changes and continuities, noting the causes and effects of each event. This visual representation will help them see the progression of Australian society over time.

  • Change vs. Continuity Chart:

The student will create a chart that lists changes and continuities in Australian society. They will categorize these changes and discuss the implications of each, encouraging critical thinking about how these elements shape society today.

  • Creative Presentation:

The student will choose one significant event from their timeline and create a short presentation (could be a poster, a digital slideshow, or a brief oral presentation) that explains the event, its causes, effects, and its relevance to modern Australia.

  • Discussion and Reflection:

Engage in a discussion about the importance of understanding history. The student will reflect on how the changes and continuities they studied affect their own life and the society they live in today.
