Objective

By the end of this lesson, Vinee will be able to identify the key elements of the horror genre, analyze how these elements create suspense and fear, and use them to craft her own short horror story.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencils for writing exercises
  • Examples of classic horror stories or excerpts (can be found online or in books)
  • Quiet space for reading and writing

Before the lesson, review some classic horror stories to have examples ready for discussion. Make sure to choose age-appropriate material!

Activities

  • Introduction to Horror Genre:

Start with a fun discussion about what horror means. Ask Vinee if she has any favorite spooky stories or movies. Show her a short excerpt from a horror story and discuss the feelings it evokes.

  • Identifying Key Themes:

Have Vinee brainstorm a list of words that come to mind when she thinks of horror. Then, together, create a list of common elements in horror stories, such as monsters, dark settings, and suspenseful moments.

  • Creative Writing:

Encourage Vinee to write her own short horror story. Remind her to use the elements we've discussed. Give her prompts if she needs help getting started, like "What if you found a mysterious door in your basement?"

  • Sharing Stories:

Once Vinee has written her story, have her read it aloud. This will help her practice her storytelling skills and receive feedback. You can also discuss what parts were the most suspenseful!
